Top 5 alternatives to the Apple iPod Nano
I think a lot has been said about the ipod nano 4th generation since it was launched last week. New Gadgets Guru also ran a post about its review as recent as yesterday. But think about it, do we really have other alternatives out there? What if I DIDN'T want to buy an Apple product? Where would I go, what would I buy?
Here are some alternatives to the iPod Nano you can consider. They are in no particular order.
1. Microsoft Zune
Clearly a worthy contender for the iPod Nano. Ever since Microsoft announced its plans to get into the MP3 bandwagon, it has been making steady progress in this market. It is still a long way from the undeniable leader of the pack though. Anyway, this little device has excellent audio fidelity, podcast support and an intuitive user interface. Yes, it allows music sharing over WiFi!
2. Samsung S3
I've always thought that the biggest thing that Apple did was to position the iPod Nano as the benchmark for mp3 style. Well now that might change with the Samsung S3 being a contender in terms of the style department. Of course an MP3 player does need to do a good job at being a fun device and the Samsung S3's user interface does a neat job at that.
3. Sony NWZ-S710F
An audio player discussion without mention of Sony? Don't think that's possible. Even though being a late entry in this department Sony has been pretty much successful in churning out quality MP3 players. The Sony NWZ-S710F does deserve special mention for its sound quality. And did I mention they include active noise-cancelling headphones in the box? Yummy!
4. Creative Zen Mozaic
Yes, Creative Zen deserves a mention too. But rather than for its sound quality or super duper features, it is more for an "affordable" price tag. You could easily pick one up for less than $100 at a store near you. But other than that... (yawn!).
5. Sandisk Sansa Fuze
Ok this baby is a real bargain. If you're lucky you could even pick the 8GB model for less than $100. Now that's what I call a bargain. The sound quality is pretty neat too. It is a nice little compact beauty and comes with a micro-SD slot for additional storage space as well. Like a station wagon with some extra space in the trunk. You never need it but you want one!
Do you have a favorite that I might have missed? Let me know and I'll write it up next time!

iPod Nano 4G review: nothing new here...
It's been a week since the all new iPod Nano 4G was launched by Steve Jobs. So its about time that we sat down to review this all new gadget from Apple. The first thing that comes to my mind when I look at the iPod Nano 4G is that its very much similar to the iPod Nano 2G (I hope you realize that I mean "Generation" when I say "G").
The all new iPod Nano 4G has the same 8GB and 16GB capacities as the previous version. It has a somewhat curved feeling to its body which makes it feel good when you are holding it. It is still pretty much small in size and would fit in your pocket nicely. One thing to note is that the edges are quite sharp so you might want to handle them carefully if your pants are pretty thin. It does have an improved user interface and the built in accelerometer is something to look forward to.
The smoothness of the accelerometer function is definitely an added advantage especially when it comes to playing games. Those games which were previously on the iPod Nano are able to access the motion sensing feature which makes it pretty cool. Switching from landscape to portrait mode is also typically fast and nothing new if you have used the iPhone or the iPod Touch before.
One feature to note is the Genius playlist creation feature which has been introduced by Apple. This little software feature browses through your collection of music and recommends the songs which could be grouped into a play list. Interesting feature but I wonder how it would work for international music collections. The iPod Nano 4G also comes with a Voice Memo application, but you need to buy a separate set of earphones as the standard ones do not have a mic. This all new iPod Nano comes in a variety of 9 colors to choose from but interestingly no white this time around.
Frankly speaking I don't see people rushing to Apple stores to change their iPod Nano 3G to the latest and greatest from Apple simply because of the lack of differentiating features. Apple could have taken some extra effort in the product planning phase of this device. But all said and done, if you are seriously looking for your first iPod Nano or worse - you want to change that iPod Nano 1G(cough) or 2G(cough) then you should get your hands on this. Amazon has started selling them already!

The all new iPod Touch - with gaming features!
According to Desinformado, this is the all new iPod Touch. It does look really cool and has borrowed a few ideas from its call making cousin. The second generation iPod Touch sports an amazingly thin contoured body, a 3.5 inch widescreen glass display, 802.11 b/g WiFi, integrated volume control buttons, a built-in speaker for casual listening, accelerometer and Apple's revolutionary Multi-Touch interface. The iPod Touch is marketed as an advanced music player as well as a handheld gaming console.
“iPod touch is the funnest iPod we’ve ever created,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Users can listen to millions of songs, watch thousands of Hollywood movies and now, thanks to the App Store, download and play hundreds of great games on their iPod touch.”
With the new iPod Touch, users can choose and download hundreds of exciting games such as "Spore Origin" and "Scrabble" from EA (Electronic Arts) on iTunes or directly from the App Store. Various other applications for travel, entertainment, social networking and sports are also available for download. The new iPod Touch works with the all new iTunes 8 which comes with the genius feature as mentioned in my previous post about the all new iPod Nano.
The new iPod touch is available immediately for a suggested price of $229 (US) for the 8GB model, $299 (US) for the 16GB and $399 (US) for the 32 GB model through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers.
This is an absolute beauty! I'm really looking forward to the gaming feature in the new iPod Touch. Great job, Mr. Jobs!

The all new iPod nano comes in 9 different colors and in an all aluminum body. The new Genius feature apparently turns your iPod into an intelligent personal DJ. How to convert your DVD movies to iPod format?
Now you've got that spanking new iPod which can play movies. But you can only download movies from iTunes right? Why not store your DVD movies into your iPod instead? That would be awesome since you can watch any of your collections on your iPod on the go. But how to do that? I'm going to reveal to you a software which allows you to convert any of your movies into iPod format so that you can store it and watch it anytime that you want.
iTunes doesn't have a converter to put DVD video on your video player! It won't let you import many popular video formats either!
So... how can you put DVDs and videos on your video player or iPod?
The answer is you need special conversion software that will take your DVD and convert it into a format that the video player can understand.
But don't worry, it's not difficult. With DVD2VideoPlayer, you'll be shown step-by-step how to put a DVD or video file onto an iPod or other video player device.
By converting the DVDs and video files you have already, you don't need to pay $1.99+ to buy each video from iTunes! Plus, you can convert videos that aren't even on iTunes yet.
DVD2VideoPlayer Shows How To:
* Convert DVDs to your iPod
* Convert WMV files
* Convert AVI files
* Convert DivX files
* Convert TiVo files
* Convert MPEG files
* Convert VOB files
* Convert AVISynth files
You can get this cool software here. Try DVD2VideoPlayer and let me know your experience. I'm sure its worth it!

New design for iPod Nano?
Kevin Rose from digg has apparently unearthed the fact that the iPod Nano is due for a new design this fall. After months of speculation, this news might just be true after all. The iPod Touch is also due for some cosmetic touch up as well. It is also rumored that future Macs will offer Blu-Ray support. Exciting times ahead I must say!

Time to slash iPod Touch price
Following the success of the iPhone, its high time that Apple slashed the price of the iPod Touch. After all its not a phone and not many people would like to carry 2 gadgets in their pockets when they travel. In line with this, Apple has been slashing the price of its refurbished iPod Touch slowly but steadily. Recent news from Gizmodo states that the price has been slashed to $199 for the 8GB version while the price has been slashed to $299 for the 16GB version. For those not looking at changing their mobile phones, this might be a good chance to get their hands on one of the iPod Touch models. I'm guessing that the price for the non-refurbished models will be coming down soon as well.

2008 Beijing Olympics fever for an MP3 player
Yeah that's right. Looks like the Chinese have managed to cash on the Olympics fever to produce this MP3 player. It looks like the bird's nest stadium that was built for the Olympics. Although I doubt there's any trace of avian saliva on it.
Some of the specifications are as follows:
* Support music format as: MP1、MP2、MP3、WMA、WMV、ASF、WAV etc
* Functional firmware updating
* FM tuner with stereo radio (optional)
* Plug and play USB function (Windows XP/2000)
* 7 EQ: Pop, Classic, Jazz, Rock, Normal, Dbb, Soft
* Built-in microphone and ultra-long recording and support WAV/ACT format
* Digital voice recording
* Support individuation files
Hardly a competitor for the iPods and other MP3 players out there. Another piece of junk?

New iPod dock station from Digital Signature
iPods are making their presence felt everywhere - your pocket, the car, home and I mean everywhere!!! Quite a few manufacturers including Bose and Sharp have been successful in creating iPod docks which act as your home HiFi system by just simply plugging in your iPod into the docking station. Here we look at the Mint 220 Wireless Speakers with iPod Dock.
This system has been released by Digital Signature.Besides the ability of reading iPhone contents, this new iPod dock reads Mac/PC files thanks to its 2.4GHz wireless connection. Our new device provides an output power of 30Watts (RMS) at 8Ω, a frequency range of 60Hz – 26KHz, and features two 3.5" full range speakers, and digital equalization function.
The Mint 220 is provided with an USB transmitter with an operating frequency of 2.4 GHz unlicensed ISM band, and a max RF output of 20dBm.
The speakers are not too bad according to Gizmodo. The speakers themselves are adequate, though not as good as their previous wireless iPod dock effort. The 220 functions decently well as an iPod dock, but what you really want this for is its wireless speaker functions.
Well I'm always skeptic towards wireless speakers and with the 2.4GHz I'm sure there
are plenty of gadgets around the house to cause interference. I like sound "streamed" to my speakers the good old fashioned way. Yay!

ipod touch review
The iPod Touch is sexy. It is significantly smaller than the iPhone (only 60% as thick). It is only a bit thicker than the iPod Nano. The screen is essentially the same as the iPhones that you get in the market without 3G. The difference being that the quality of blacks is arguably a bit washed out (this is a complaint only given by some of the buyers and will probably be fixed by apple. If your iPod Touch has any issues Apple will replace it). The iPod touch is all black, whereas the iPhone has a metal bezel around the front - this makes the Touch a bit better of a media playback device.
Battery Juice
The battery, as with all iPods before it is not removable. It is rated for 22 hours of audio, 5 hours of video, and 5 hours of WiFi internet browsing by Apple.
Playing with the toys
Software
The audio, video, and web browsing is all great. The software is excellent and its very stable unlike some other big names we know.
Internet Browsing
The internet browsing on the iPod Touch works over any WiFi point to which you have access. The Touch uses Safari and is just as good as the iPhone in terms of its internet functioning.
iTunes WiFi store
Over a WiFi network, you can buy songs directly to your iPod Touch. What you can't do is download videos or podcasts over WiFi.
