Blu-ray / DVD hybrid debuts in Japan

blu ray dvd hybrid disc
The very first Blu-ray / DVD hybrid disc has made its appearance in Japan. The Hybrid Blu-ray/DVD disc is a combination of a traditional DVD with the new high-definition Blu-ray format. Originally developed by JVC more than two years ago, the disc has a blue laser top layer (25GB); underneath there are two more layers just like an ordinary DVD (8.5GB).

This Blu-ray / HD hybrid disc is compatible with most DVD players currently in the market. Infiniti storage media claims that it achieves a compatibility of 99% according to tests made on 64 Blu-ray and DVD players. But it looks like the first release will be quite expensive. Expect the first movie package (4 discs) to retail at around $406 which is a steep price especially during these times.

@Shamim: I'm sure such a combo drive will definitely be introduced in the market once Blu Ray discs are more cheaper

It'll be silly when you can burn Blu-Ray things... imagine how big the files will be?

More news in the Blu-Ray world is cool though ;)
